Fall/Winter 2014 Collection Submission Guidelines

Garments: Holla Knits is looking for garments of all shapes and sizes for cold weather. Geometric prints and shapes created with colorwork or texture will be the focus. As always, Holla Knits publishes challenging knitting patterns, so challenge yourself as a designer to come up with something that the average knitter will have to take a second look at. While The Fall/Winter 2013 collection was colorwork focused, Fall/Winter 2014 will be texture focused. But texture+colorwork? Be still my heart!

Use those advanced knitting skills and produce a show stopping knit you want to wear every time you leave the house. Bold but wearable. These are risky, unique knits you won’t see in print knitting pattern magazines.

This collection is knit garments only, so as long as you can wear it on your body as a main piece of clothing, it counts. Please don’t submit accessories of any kind. For the Fall/Winter Collection, think about transitional pieces as well as straight up cold weather knits.

For more specific inspiration, check out my Holla Knits Pinterest Board.

Holla Knits is for those designs you think won’t be published anywhere else. Take risks. Think amazing, show stopping knits.

How to Submit: Sketch, swatch, describe, style, send.

Sketch: Draw me a picture of your garment. Try to show me how it will lay, how long are the sleeves, how long is the body, how long is the skirt, how thick are the cables? Is it more interesting in the back than it is in the front? Show me a sketch of both sides. I want to be able to get an idea of what you’re knitting for me from this sketch, even if you can’t draw.

Swatch: If chosen, your garment will be knit in two different yarns. First, a commercially available yarn, something from Knit Picks or Webs, or yarn that can be found at JoAnn or Michaels – yarns like Patons, Carron, Lion Brand, Red Heart. Second, specialty yarn – hand spun and/or hand dyed by an indi fiber artist. If you chose to knit your swatch using a specialty yarn, please make sure the fiber artist is willing to provide yarn support if your pattern is chosen. Make sure they know they will get an add on the pattern and their yarn as the suggested yarn on the pattern. This is great advertisement! If you chose to knit up your swatch in a commercially available yarn this is not necessary. You will only knit up one sample. A test knitter will be testing your pattern in the second yarn.

Describe: Tell me all about your design. Tell me why it’s hot. Tell me why women will dig it. Tell me about the yarn you chose for it. Tell me about the color. Tell me about the stitch patterns or stripes or lace! Tell me why this is special. And be sure to tell me about you as a designer! Is this your first or 93,488,572th design? What makes you you?

Style: How would you wear your garment? Describe, draw me pictures, photoshop something together! Get creative and tell me about all the different ways I will be wearing your garment when I’m finished knitting it.

Send: Mail it to me! You are welcome to email me (allyson@hollaknits.com) your description, styling, and sketch and just mail your swatch, or mail everything. Make sure your name and email address is on every piece you submit. Your submission materials will not be returned to you. If you are an international designer just take pictures of everything you can and email me your complete submission.

Payment: If your pattern is selected for Holla Knits I’ll send you yarn to knit your garment. You’ll send it to me when it’s finished, and I’ll send it back to you once I’m finished shooting it. On top of yarn support, I’ll send you $100 pattern sales advance. After that advance, you’ll get 75% of all subsequent pattern sales and I’ll send you a check or by paypal quarterly.

You retain the rights to your pattern. I’ll send you the edited, final Holla Knits copy of your pattern, which you are welcome to sell yourself anytime after it debuts on Holla Knits, per your designer contract. Don’t hesitate to email me with any questions about payment or terms.

Deadline: Deadline for submitting to the Fall/Winter 2014 Collection of Holla Knits is Friday March 28th, 2014. Patterns will then be selected, yarn sent out, and selected garments will be due back to me by Friday May 16th, 2014. The Fall/Winter 2014 Collection will go live on Monday, September 8th, 2014.

Questions, Comments, Concerns: Don’t hesitate to email me at allyson@hollaknits.com with any questions about submitting. This can be an intimidating process so I want to make it as simple as possible.

I designed New Girl with Knit Picks Stroll Sport, which has since been discontinued. Which is a huge bummer because I love this yarn! Luckily there are lots of fun sport weight options out there to choose from.

Knit Picks Shine sport

Shine Sport is a great alternative and probably closest to Stroll Sport, and there are quite a few fun color combos!
